Writing For the Sake of Writing
April 26th, 2004 Posted in GeneralTo continue down my path of writing for the sake of writing (and hopefully developing a better habit for the site), here goes:
This weekend, in a rarity, I did no yardwork other than mentioned in my previous post. What did I do?
I went and worked out with Amy Saturday mid-day. Amy is about Jessica’s height, and female, and well… I really hadn’t figured that she would be able to outlift/outlast me at the gym. Boy was I wrong! For those of you who aren’t regular readers of Domesticat, Amy has been working out now for 3 months, and as I learned first-hand, it’s been a very serious three months. We’ll just leave this bit of the story on the note that I only made it through half of her workout that she does three times a week. Some of the exercises that she showed me will become epart of mine (replacing other, more awkward exercises). Some were weird enough to me that I’ll probably wait for a meeting with Val before I try them again (the ball lift one comes to mind there). But one thing that workout really did show me is that while I am getting comfortable and seeing progress in the exercises that I am doing, the machines that I use only work very specific muscles and as soon as I move away from my comfort machines to say free-weights, I’m close to as bad as I was when I started this a month ago.
During this whole workout, I was able to listen to (and occasionally watch) the NFL Draft unfold. Boy was I dissapointed when Eli was drafted by the chargers. Thankfully, while still in the gym the trade went through that made him a Giant. It didn’t take him long to head for new your either as he showed up in the highlight of a New York Nicks playoff game this morning. For those of you less familiar with football, the Eli I speak of is not the Eli that all of us locally (and many others around the country know and love) have known for months as Sprout. No, this Eli is of the Manning family and Jessica and I were priviledged enough to have been able to watch an aweful lot of his collegiate career in person.
Post-workout, I did some homework, made supper, and then we watched TV for the rest of the evening.
With Jessica working Sunday from 11-3, we dragged ourselves out of the bed oh so early (7:00 on a weekend is early, right?). We made it to early service and Sunday school. She carried on with work while I continued my mound of homework. She got home that afternoon and the next thing I knew we were heading to Sonic because she wanted ice cream. Who was I to argue, even though we were off to church in another hour or so.
Church last night was the brightspot in an otherwise boring day. Our church, Trinity Baptist was celebrating the end of its Leap of Faith campaign. This marked the end of a period in which we committed to help in the costs of expanding our santuary. Last night, to celebrate, and to announce the final total, the church brought in Greenbriar BBQ for everyone. I’ve never seen a line so long
We got to see Stephen, Misty, and Eli (always great to see the Granades!) and got to meet more of the people in our church. After dinner, we had a service led by the youth with testimonials interleaved with the music. The music and the testimonials really touched my heart and it was a great time. When the numbers were announced, it was revealed that there are some people within our church family that are tremendously generous and as a result the pledged total far exceeded the target! It was a very good evening!
We went home, got to talk with Mom and Dad for a bit, watched some TV, and then read for a bit before I passed out around 9:45. I really do think I’m getting old
And just for completeness:
TV watching = Band of Brothers on the History Channel. If you can take the time to watch it, it is VERY good.
Reading = The Glorious Appearing (or something close to that) It’s book ten and the finale to the Left Behind series. I’ve been reading on this series now since my freshman year at state and am so excited about getting to read this book. Also a very good read.
And that should do it for now.

Wow, you read LaHaye and Jenkins? For pure fiction value, I guess it’s not bad, but man, I think their reading of things is screwy.
Churches always associate the term “leap of faith” with “bringing in lots of money”. It always amuses me.

It’s an easy and interesting read. I haven’t studied enough of Revelations or the other prophesies on the end-times to have a real opinion on it, but from what I have read I can tell that it is a bit of a stretch. They take one line from one book and expand it into half a book. But as I said, it’s interesting. And it’s not like I can be much of a book-snob with me still reading my Star Wars novels.
